Talent Nights, Timewarps, The Catholic Church and Taramosalata…..#1

A mixed bag of a weekend. My darling daughter somehow convinced me to enter the school talent contest with her, singing – The Timewarp. Great, except it is a Catholic School, and some of the lyrics may well have been considered more than slightly morally dubious by the people who already give me dirty looks when I darken the school gates by my mere presence…….

So the pelvic thrust gave way to ‘the wiggle round’, and Columbia’s smutty verse was replaced by a squeaky-clean school themed one. I just hid the truth of Magenta’s under a thick Transylvanian accent.. The things I have to do. Then I had to spend the rest of the week improvising a Columbia costume for a very small person. (I’m kind of well-provided for Magenta, though I did cut the suspenders out, add a less revealing top and a longer skirt……). It was possibly the longest evening in history. By the time we came on, Berni, Giana and I were slowly losing the will to live (but they had to stay to vote!) We had various not very successful magicians and petrified small children meeping into the mike. We did come second, but M_____ most miffed as we had charitably voted for the person who beat us by one vote.

Saturday morning, went to commission the jewelery I am having made with the 40th Birthday money from my parents. By pure fluke the other week found a fantastic lady on Pedder Street who hand-makes silver jewellery, and allows you to choose and feel the stones, and design the setting, and to cap it all is a Pagan (we got chatting). Fell in love with a fantastic hat in black veiling with black roses but even I with my tenuous grasp of the neccessity or not of clothes couldn’t convince myself a hat at £185.00 was a neccessity……but it was gorgeous….

Saturday afternoon was feeling really icky again, but was determined to go round to AmethystDragon’s house as it was TNO’s birthday, so ended up even having an afternoon nap to try and achieve this, and taking even more medication. Woke up at 4.30pm feeling even worse…….aaagh!

The Big Four-Oh-Ow My Head Hurts…..Fit the Second

So, finally Saturday I am just about able to stand up and behave slightly less like an extra from Return of the Living Dead….I still needed the shades though, thank heaven for prescription shades is all I can say. Mr A then took me and the gothlet out to Preston in search of goth bits for my birthday.

So I ended up with wonderfully floaty goth princess dress

which looks a bit like…….

Except that mine is black and red and not purple and black… a pair of pewter red-eyed bat earrings. Then on to the next goth emporium, where Mr A got himself a skull tie to wear with his zoot suit, and I got a PVC miniskirt for when I feel skinnier (ha ha, even after a week not eating- haven’t lost an ounce…). Then, typically when we had no money, found an ace PVC and leather shop…they had a Vampirella PVC Cloak to die for, and loads of other goodies. I’m going back when I get paid!

Still a little fragile, so home for a nap, then got myself gothed up for the evening…..lacy body, lacy short at the front-long at the back skirt with mad tutu underneath so I had a bustle bottom, the little waspie I got in London the other week, my new boots, ponky-knots in my hair with lots of red roses, and a tiara..(it is my birthday!)

(this was the corset and this is Martha modelling it in the Elizium catalogue…)

Mr A wouldn’t tell me where we were going….just to goth up. Yes, he wore the zoot suit and even took his mad crystal-topped pimp cane to complete the look.

Then he took me off to the Carleton, where AD and TNO, Spicy Cauldron and D, Beautifu1, Kitty and Scat, Dam and Woo, Silent, Steb…..were all waiting. Mr A had made me a cake as big as a cartwheel…literally, he had to buy a garden table to put it on…it was a pentacle, with the full 40 candles (took me 5 minutes to blow them out).

I had loads of gorgeous pressies too. The only slight downer was the music. Dam and Mr A had fixed for the DJ to play a CD of stuff I like, but it didn’t work on his dinosaur system….and I don’t like rock. The more I asked for anything a bit gothy or punky, the more the guy played Status Quo. I REALLY don’t like rock. Got a bit upset at that point. However, the line of Gin and Tonic cheered me up and I was too drunk to think about my head any more. Dam managed to get him to play ‘Sanctuary’ finally. Mr A snogged me so hard on the dancefloor I had lipstick round my ears.

Mr A and Dam had also raided my computer for pics and had put Happy 40th Khlari and the pics into the big screen system at the club, which meant I had loads of 12 year old emos asking me every time I went to the loo if I was REAALLLY 40. After that I collapsed in a gin-soaked heap. A good night was had by all! Thanks to everyone involved for making it a fantastic evening. Now, today, back on Planet Reality, have to go and see my M.A. tutor…about the novel, which I haven’t touched for weeks due to the big bad head…………

The Big Four-Oh-Ow My Head Hurts…..Fit the First

Posted in blogging, creative / writing, gothic, london, me and my world, migraines, morecambe, work/life balance on June 27, 2007 by Khlari

It has been a very mixed couple of weeks to say the very least….The Thursday before last, ie the 14th, my head began hurting at work. So off to bed I went when I came home, having dutifully taken my Zolmitriptan……and it didn’t go. I don’t remember much of Friday, nor in fact of most of the weekend. Monday to the G.P. as I had run out of medication (I only get 6 at a time which is no good if it lasts that long- apparently they are ‘too expensive’- glad to know I’m worth it, eh?).

G.P. then gave me some more, as well as some acupuncture which was just amazingly damn weird. As I wouldn’t have cared by that time if he had chopped my head off, that was fine. Felt like a series of electric shocks, most peculiar. That eased it a little, for an hour or two. By Tuesday night though, ended up in A & E at the local hospital, where they kept me waiting the traditional 3 hours in screaming pain under the striplights. They then asked me what they used to do in France if it got this bad. So I told them, morphine injections/suppositories, as I couldn’t keep anything down. I had been living on milky tea for five days by this point. Whereupon I was subjected to a barrage of questions about my ‘drug-misusing’. I said that they only gave me morphine about 3 times ever but we had to run through my entire teenage spliff history before they gave me some poxy codeine and sent me home.

Then back to the G.P. on Thursday. Dihydrocodeine this time. Began to work finally late on Friday, when I finally succeeded in keeping some of it down without puking, but I was still a fragile bunny. So ten days of my life down the lavvy because my migraine drugs are too expensive. Now back on Stage 2 Disciplinary at work as well. Like I wanted it, thanks. Back to G.P. tomorrow to try and get referred somewhere that might actually take this seriously. he did suggest getting it registered as a disability, which might be handy if I never wanted to work again….And no, a paracetamol doesn’t work. Pissing in the wind springs to mind. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Bela Lugosi’s Toenails!

I am going to steal an idea from SurlyGirl here. Have you ever noticed on your feeds how people have come to your blog through arcane google searches?

Think about the penguins. Those penguins gave me more readers than I could have dreamed of. Surly Girl’s experience was about Sarah Beeny’s tits……Therefore I am going to make the rest of this post up with arcane statements and see how many more bizarre readers I get through mentioning them…….

Let’s see….

Ditta von Teese’s bellybutton maybe. That might be a good one. Or maybe with the penguin theme…..Penguin kinky sex.

What about Pagan Penguin Perversion probably get three hits for the price of one on that one.

Dragons seem to get lots of hits on mine too. Lets use Dragon Penguin Morecambe Hussy. From the last couple of days we could have Victorian Cauldron Gestapo Frida Kahlo. Or Pentacle Penguin Happy Fairy. Or Gothic London Penguin Post. Maybe Marie Lloyd Mabon Billy Bragg.

Frequent ones are Gothic, Fairy, Penguin, Pagan…..but some of them it is honestly unfathomable how they get to me. Maybe this could rival googlewhacking- with the person who gets the most hits from the most bizarre things winning?

Champagne Cocktails, Transport Cock-ups, Tiaras, and the Shanghai Shuffle…..the misadventures of a wild weekend #2

Posted in blogging, creative / writing, glasgow, hen night, london, me and my world, morecambe, music, pagan on June 6, 2007 by Khlari

Where did I get to? Oh yes, bawling out the hits at Shanghai Shuffle. Made a complete idiot of myself, as did the whole place! But it was very good fun. very nice cocktails, I was obliged to drink ‘Pretty in Pink’ ones all night to co-ordinate with my outfit…..(that’s my excuse). Then we went off in search of somewhere else to go. Wandered up and down Sauchiehall Street, trying to find somewhere still open, and Giana was struggling a bit as she’s on crutches…….

Finally decided that the hotel had a bar, so had to go there and demolish even more champagne……and Drambuie. Finally got to bed after Bernie had decided to ring Mr A at 3 am and heavy-breathe at him. His response- ‘Bernadette, do you have asthma?’ Finally to bed at about 4am……

Crawled out of bed and had an enormous breakfast, then off to Central Station for a train……here goes my train jinx again.

We had to get a train to Carlisle, wait a bit, then on to a place called Hellifield (none of us even knew where that was), then finally Lancaster. Five hours. Had to ring Mr A to tell him to come and get me straight from the station……

Carlisle was shut. Literally. Bang went all hope of a cup of tea. Then they tried to convince us to go by bus to Lancaster…(No- not on a Sunday thanks.) On to Hellifield over the Settle and Carlisle line, supposedly one of the most beautiful train lines in the world. We were a little to frazzled to notice as we stopped at all of the 13 stops en route….to Hellifield.

Which turned out to be in North Yorkshire, so we were only about 30 miles from Leeds…some detour.

Finally got to Lancaster, then in the car and Mr A had to drive me down to London. Took ages even to get the other side of Preston. Then going fine till we hit near monsoon the other side of Northampton. Didn’t arrive till 11.30 as then had to drive at 30mph, couldn’t see anything.

M________ really pleased to see us and disgustingly spoilt and brown after weekend at hideous family reunion.

Monday morning, Mr A went on a mission, to buy an OTT African wedding suit…and he did. It’s red and black with a long zoot-suit like jacket, and he is seriously in love with it. Wouldn’t be too bad but I have to be with him when he wears it……… Then he topped it all by buying a t-shirt with 50s bathing beauties on it. I despair. He seems to like the OTT clothes in Hackney, why did I take him???? I now have to walk down the street with a goth pirate in a zoot suit.

Then back to Lancaster. OK, Mr A had to drive, and we didn’t get home til 7pm after his shopping spree. So in one weekend I have done the equivalent of a return trip from London to Glasgow with detours. Now need a holiday to get over it all.
