Mabon, time of endings and beginnings……

Posted in creative / writing, gothic, me and my world, morecambe, pagan on September 25, 2006 by Khlari

On a more positive note, I thought that I’d make a post (a little late as I didn’t manage to do it before the weekend), about Mabon. Mabon was really the first Sabbat that I ever did a ritual for. I felt it was appropriate in this context for its qualities of the drawing together of family and what is important, as well as symbolising both the closing of doors on what is past, and opening a period of reflection. It is also a sabbat which

Mabon
Autumn Equinox, 2nd Harvest, September 21st

Mabon, (pronounced MAY-bun, MAY-bone, MAH-boon, or MAH-bawn) is the Autumn Equinox. The Autumn Equinox divides the day and night equally, and we all take a moment to pay our respects to the impending dark. We also give thanks to the waning sunlight, as we store our harvest of this year’s crops. The Druids call this celebration, Mea’n Fo’mhair, and honor the The Green Man, the God of the Forest, by offering libations to trees. Offerings of ciders, wines, herbs and fertilizer are appropriate at this time. Wiccans celebrate the aging Goddess as she passes from Mother to Crone, and her consort the God as he prepares for death and re-birth.

Various other names for this Lesser Wiccan Sabbat are The Second Harvest Festival, Wine Harvest, Feast of Avalon, Equinozio di Autunno (Strega), Alben Elfed (Caledonii), or Cornucopia. The Teutonic name, Winter Finding, spans a period of time from the Sabbat to Oct. 15th, Winter’s Night, which is the Norse New Year.

At this festival it is appropriate to wear all of your finery and dine and celebrate in a lavish setting. It is the drawing to and of family as we prepare for the winding down of the year at Samhain. It is a time to finish old business as we ready for a period of rest, relaxation, and reflection.

Symbolism of Mabon:
Second Harvest, the Mysteries, Equality and Balance.

Symbols of Mabon:
wine, gourds, pine cones, acorns, grains, corn, apples, pomegranates, vines such as ivy, dried seeds, and horns of plenty.

Herbs of Maybon:
Acorn, benzoin, ferns, grains, honeysuckle, marigold, milkweed, myrrh, passionflower, rose, sage, solomon’s seal, tobacco, thistle, and vegetables.

Foods of Mabon:
Breads, nuts, apples, pomegranates, and vegetables such as potatoes, carrots, and onions.

Incense of Mabon:
Autumn Blend-benzoin, myrrh, and sage.

Colors of Mabon:
Red, orange, russet, maroon, brown, and gold.

Stones of Mabon:
Sapphire, lapis lazuli, and yellow agates.

Activities of Mabon:
Making wine, gathering dried herbs, plants, seeds and seed pods, walking in the woods, scattering offerings in harvested fields, offering libations to trees, adorning burial sites with leaves, acorns, and pine cones to honor those who have passed over.

Spellworkings of Mabon:
Protection, prosperity, security, and self-confidence. Also those of harmony and balance.

Deities of Mabon:
Goddesses-Modron, Morgan, Epona, Persephone, Pamona and the Muses. Gods-Mabon, Thoth, Thor, Hermes, and The Green Man.

Mabon is considered a time of the Mysteries. It is a time to honor Aging Deities and the Spirit World. Considered a time of balance, it is when we stop and relax and enjoy the fruits of our personal harvests, whether they be from toiling in our gardens, working at our jobs, raising our families, or just coping with the hussle-bussle of everyday life. May your Mabon be memorable, and your hearts and spirits be filled to overflowing!

This one made for interesting reading…..

Looking at some of the discussion around the post I put up the other day about narcissism, I was also intersted to read this one about the closely connected phenomenon of Emtional Vampirism. Apparently they divide into the self-obsessed and the paranoid, I think we’ve all met a few of the paranoid kind…….

Paranoid Emotional Vampire Checklist

Paranoid Vampires are visionaries who search hard for the Truth. They see things that others can’t. The question is whether those things are really there.

LOOK FOR: Absolute certainty about themselves and their beliefs, distrust of everything else.

DRAW YOU IN WITH: Virtue, creativity, perceptiveness, protectiveness, and deliverance from evil.

DRAIN YOU BY: Jealousy, unshakable prejudices, constant cross-examination of every difference of opinion. Absolute belief is neither good nor evil, but it is a door through which either may enter.

THE ONES YOU SEE EVERY DAY: Jealous spouses, conspiracy theorists, and people who post weird things on the Internet.

DEFENSIVE STRATEGY: Know how to recognize a crazy idea when you hear one. Don’t answer questions when they’re asked a second time.

NEXT STOP, THE TWILIGHT ZONE

11. THIS PERSON SEES CONNECTIONS AMONG THINGS THAT MOST PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER UNRELATED. 1

2. THIS PERSON SEES LITTLE MISTAKES, SUCH AS LACK OF PUNCTUALITY OR FORGETTING INSTRUCTIONS, AS INDICATIONS OF DISLOYALTY OR DISRESPECT.

13. THIS PERSON TELLS PEOPLE WHAT OTHERS ONLY SAY BEHIND THEIR BACKS.

14. THIS PERSON MAY HAVE A GOOD SENSE OF HUMOR, BUT CANNOT SEEM TO LAUGH AT HIM OR HERSELF.

Yo ho ho and several bottles of rum later…..

Aargh mateys……Cap’n Khlari would like to report that the pirate night was a rip roarin’ rum-drinkin’ success. Cap’n A was ravishing in his wig, aha the crimson pirate was he, Ship’s Lass M_______ sported an eyepatch and dashing cloak, and fair bristled with cutlasses and weaponry.

Capn’s Amethyst Dragon and OH were respectively the spectacularly purple-corseted pirate and Cap’n Bligh lookalike, whilst ship’s boy Sam had a spiffing velvet shirt, and ship’s lass Emma a most pirate-y skirt.

The Morecambe Hotel was garlanded in skulls, crossbones and paper pterodactyls, oops I mean parrots of course…. The creatin’ had been goin’ on all afternoon, and’ eyepatches and tricorns produced. Cap’n Woo Pinkbeard (name says it all really) complete with corset, presided over the festivities, aided by a be-striped Claudia. a fetchingly bandanna’d Tee, and baby pirate Saffron, complete with skull and crossbone socks…….Cap’n Dam made an appearance in those trousers, and a velvet shirt, though I be unsure if pirates had flip-flops…..

A darin’ raidin’ party was led to The Smugglers Inn in search of Old Rosey, led by the intrepid Pinkbeard….

Some pirates disgraced themselves by singing Kinky Boots very badly at Karaoke………( I shall remain nameless…..) Whilst the ships lads and lasses performed a stunning Timewarp, much to the joy of their piratical parents….

A jolly piratical evening was had by all

A bit of AAAAGh Ian Astbury as well!

Busy week ahead…..

Tomorrow night am off to see The Cult in Manchester with Mr A and Helen Pete and Kath from the M.A….

Haven’t seen them since the Ceremony tour in 1992…at G-Mex….. Makes me wonder what on earth they look like now….Ian Astbury was my teeange rock star crush, one of the ultimate moments of my teenage years was throwing a pint of beer all over him by accident at a Doctor and the Medics gig at Heaven circa 1985…… he was very nice about it, but close up he was even lovelier……

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum…….and a bit of arrrgh mateys…..

Posted in creative / writing on September 19, 2006 by Khlari

Well a busy week beckons, and no, I’m not talking about work, god forbid. Tonight’s delight is the ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’ organised by Dam and Woo at the Morecambe Hotel. (Lord Street, Morecambe, if anyone fancies coming along)

This is nothing but an excuse for a bunch of adults to dress up, wield cutlasses and shout ‘aaargh mateys’ at each other all evening. There is also a karaoke (which makes me wonder what pirates sing????)

M_____ has been practising for weeks, and can’t wait to get her outfit on, Mr A has a very fetching wig, and I have a bizarre stripey pirate-girl conconction to wear……..

Photos will be posted, you are warned……

ahhhhh Jim lad!
